David Ritter
David joined Grimshaw in 2024 to lead sustainability across the ANZ region. He is an interdisciplinary thinker having spent over 25 years as a sustainability specialist and leader, weaving a path between architectural and engineering practice. An innovator and natural collaborator he has a firm appreciation that the existential challenge of climate change and biodiversity emergency can only be met through industry pulling together.
Before joining Grimshaw, David founded the Melbourne office of global engineering and sustainability consultancy, Atelier Ten, giving him a deep understanding of the local planning, regulatory, commercial, technical and supply-chain opportunities and challenges for step change toward net zero carbon and regenerative design outcomes. Prior to this, he was Sustainability Director at international multi-disciplinary practice, BDP, working in the UK, MENA, Europe and China on major infrastructure, education and retail projects.
He has extensive sustainability master planning experience setting out pathways toward net zero carbon, climate resilience, health and well-being outcomes for property portfolios including Ambulance Victoria, Monash University and the Victorian School Building Authority. In addition, he has been a sustainability masterplanner for large government and commercial organisations including Development Victoria and Frasers Property.
Further to this, David has specialist skills in in ultra-low energy, high-comfort building practice, having worked on a number of Passive House projects including the Bruck Building in China, Gillies Hall at Monash University, and his own home extension. He has also trained as a PH Certified Designer.
David is passionate about educating architects and engineers in integrated design practice and has led a number of successful design studios and education collaborations including the Melbourne University, ARENA and AIRAH sponsored Integrated Design Studios.
