Creating a City for Millions: Unlocking Melbourne's Potential

22 Oct 2025
FUTURE MELBOURNE, FUTURE CONSTRUCTION SUMMIT

The past 30 years have been extraordinary for Melbourne. Marked by population growth in excess of 2 million persons, and Melbourne’s emergence as a sophisticated global city: a melting pot of culture and multicultural beacon.

Now, a quarter of the way through the 21st century, with a residential population over 5 million, Melbourne finds itself regrouping as it grabbles with the scarring inflicting by COVID-19 lockdowns, ballooning State debt, affordability pressures, and an idling property sector with a significantly increased cost base.

If current projections ring true, Melbourne will add another 3 million persons by around 2050 and be a major global metropolis. Growth at this scale will fundamentally reshape Melbourne physically and culturally, and will require recalibrations to the way we plan and build. Much rests on the shoulders of the property sector.

Join an esteemed panel of property industry heavyweights as they unpack the magnitude of this task:

  • What are the implications of this growth?
  • What must we change and how?
  • What can be learned from the past?
  • And what is role and outlook for property?
