West Gate Tunnel: Construction Updates and Traffic Alerts

West Gate Tunnel: Construction Updates and Traffic Alerts

The West Gate Tunnel Project, a significant infrastructure initiative in Melbourne, is swiftly advancing towards its final stages of completion, with an anticipated opening by the end of 2025.

This transformative project aims to enhance travel efficiency for commuters between the western suburbs and the CBD, introducing two new tunnels beneath Yarraville and establishing new connections to key city thoroughfares.

In the upcoming phase of works, attention will be focused on the removal of a tower crane located at the outbound tunnel exit. This crucial crane, standing at an impressive 50 metres tall, played a pivotal role in the construction of the tunnel exit, assisting in the installation of essential components such as the steel framework and cladding.

To ensure the safe extraction of the tower crane, planned closures are scheduled over two weekends in April along the West Gate Freeway between Williamstown Road and Millers Road. These closures will provide the necessary space for crews to operate a substantial 400-tonne crane, facilitating the dismantling process effectively.
