Victorian Councils Secure Funding for Road Safety Improvements

Victorian Councils Secure Funding for Road Safety Improvements

Over 30 councils throughout Victoria are set to implement targeted infrastructure enhancements to mitigate road accidents, following successful funding acquisitions via the Transport Accident Commission's (TAC) Local Government Grant Program.

A total of 38 local government bodies are poised to benefit from over $2.5 million in funding, recently disclosed by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.

The allocated grants will bolster initiatives tailored to safeguard vulnerable road users, with a particular focus on pedestrians and cyclists, by enhancing local road infrastructure and safety protocols.

This initiative harmonises with the 'Safe System' methodology for road safety, which centres on four key tenets: secure roads and road edges, reliable vehicles, appropriate speeds, and responsible road users.

In metropolitan Melbourne, the City of Maribyrnong plans to introduce portable, solar-powered speed advisory signs in Footscray to heighten awareness concerning vehicle speeds in bustling local precincts. Meanwhile, in the City of Stonnington, the funding will facilitate the installation of a raised pedestrian crossing connecting the Stonnington Sports Centre and Chadstone Shopping Centre, augmenting visibility and safety for pedestrians.

In regional Victoria, the Colac Otway Shire Council intends to utilise its grant to formulate a strategy aimed at enhancing safety infrastructure at intersections and pedestrian crossings, along with exploring the implementation of dedicated cycling facilities.

As the state grapples with the enduring impact of road accidents on vulnerable individuals, recent statistics demonstrate the severity of the issue. In 2023, 48 pedestrians and 12 cyclists lost their lives on Victorian roads, with over 950 others requiring hospitalization due to road incidents.

Prospective applicants can anticipate the commencement of the next round of TAC Local Government Grant Program funding applications in mid-June 2025.
