Metro Tunnel Trials Commence in August Ahead of Schedule

Metro Tunnel Trials Commence in August Ahead of Schedule

The Victorian government's Metro Tunnel Project is gearing up to enter another crucial phase of end-to-end trial operations in August, one year ahead of schedule.

On August 16 and 17, Metro Tunnel crews will undertake extensive testing of all new systems and infrastructure in a thorough dress rehearsal before the commencement of passenger services.

During these trials, trains operating on the Sunbury, Cranbourne, and Pakenham lines will pass through the Metro Tunnel. However, passengers will be required to change trains at Footscray and Caulfield to reach their final destinations, as tunnel travel is not yet permitted.

The frequency of services will be ramped up over the trial weekend, with more trains running compared to the usual weekend timetable.

These trials will put the Metro Tunnel's state-of-the-art signalling system to the test under actual operating conditions to validate the concept of "turn-up-and-go" services.

This latest phase follows a successful full day of trial operations in June, where trains covered over 3,400 kilometres and completed 265 trips between Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham East. Since testing commenced, trains have collectively travelled over 197,000 kilometres through the tunnels.

Passenger information displays onboard trains and on platforms will mimic future service patterns.

Station staff will be available throughout the trial period to assist commuters in understanding changes to their journeys, with passengers urged to pay close attention to live announcements.

The Metro Tunnel, a transformative infrastructure initiative, will link the busy Sunbury line in Melbourne's north-west with the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines in the south-east via a new tunnel beneath the city, establishing an uninterrupted rail network across Melbourne.

Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams underscored the project's significance and the ongoing testing: “The Metro Tunnel will be the biggest transformation of our rail network in more than 40 years, and we need to repeatedly trial all the complex systems before it opens later this year – one year ahead of schedule.”

Expressing gratitude towards passengers for their cooperation, she stated: “We thank passengers for their patience as we get on delivering this city-shaping project.”

Williams also highlighted the government's commitment to the project: “The Liberals opposed the Metro Tunnel and we are getting on to deliver this game-changing project – we build, they block.”

Additional full-day trial runs are scheduled in the upcoming months as the Metro Tunnel approaches completion and its public unveiling.

Upon its launch, the project is set to significantly enhance Melbourne's rail capacity and connectivity.
