Melbourne Traffic Relief: Federal Funding Targets Major Intersection Upgrades

Melbourne Traffic Relief: Federal Funding Targets Major Intersection Upgrades

The Australian Federal Government has unveiled three new initiatives as part of its $1.2 billion Road Blitz initiative, allocating $38.5 million for planning upgrades at key intersections in Melbourne's fast-growing outer suburbs.

Teaming up with the Victorian Government, the pledged funds will concentrate on addressing traffic bottlenecks in Warrandyte South, Wantirna South, and Croydon North – localities grappling with swift population growth and escalating transport demands.

The largest share of the allocation – $25 million – is earmarked for planning and development activities at the intricate Five-Ways intersection in Warrandyte South, a convergence point for Ringwood-Warrandyte Road, Croydon Road, Husseys Lane, and Brumbys Road. Witnessing a daily influx of 8000 vehicles, this intersection has seen five accidents between 2020 and 2024.

In Wantirna South, $10 million has been designated for planning enhancements at the junction of High Street Road and Mowbray Drive, proposing a new signalised T-intersection to streamline access, reduce commute times, and enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

An additional $3.5 million has been set aside to formulate a business case for upgrades at the Maroondah Highway and Yarra Road intersection in Croydon North, a known congestion spot notably busy during school drop-off and pick-up hours. The planning process will prioritise improving pedestrian access, including Kent Avenue.

“As Melbourne’s population continues to grow, we are investing in critical projects that will create better journeys for motorists,” remarked Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Gabrielle Williams.

These initiatives are part of the wider $1.2 billion Road Blitz scheme, with the Commonwealth injecting $1 billion in the 2025–26 Budget and the Victorian Government pledging $200 million towards this endeavour.
