Melbourne Completes New Pedestrian Safety Upgrades Near Stone Magnet Middle School
The City of Melbourne has completed around 1.2 miles of new sidewalks surrounding Stone Magnet Middle School and the Eddie Lee Taylor Sr. Community Complex, delivering a major boost to pedestrian and cyclist safety in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The upgrades form part of Melbourne’s ongoing investment in safer walking and riding routes, particularly in areas heavily used by students and local residents.
A Safer, More Connected NetworkNew sidewalk links have been added along several key corridors:
• Lipscomb Street from Florida Avenue to Reverend Nathaniel L. Harris Street
• The east side of Monroe Street from Spain Avenue to University Boulevard
• University Boulevard from Colbert Court to Monroe Street
To further support safety, the project includes new traffic‑calming features such as Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons and traffic cushions installed on Monroe and Lipscomb Streets to encourage slower vehicle speeds approaching newly marked pedestrian crossings.
Supported by Safe Routes to School FundingThe works were funded through the Florida Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program, which aims to make it easier and safer for children to walk or cycle to school by improving the surrounding transport environment.
This project builds on Melbourne’s broader commitment to enhancing active transport infrastructure. Earlier this year, the city completed one mile of new sidewalks and pedestrian improvements along NASA Boulevard between Eddie Allen Road and Gateway Drive.
Construction is also progressing on the Melbourne Southwest Trails project, which will deliver almost two miles of additional sidewalks and shared‑use paths along sections of Dairy Road, Florida Avenue and University Boulevard.
Continuing Commitment to Pedestrian SafetyCity officials say the recent upgrades represent a long‑term commitment to creating safer, more accessible walking and cycling routes for residents of all ages.
With multiple active transport projects underway or recently completed, Melbourne continues to strengthen its pedestrian network and improve safety across key community hubs.
