The New South Wales Government has awarded four major contracts for Sydney Metro West, marking a major step forward for the 24‑kilometre underground line connecting the Sydney CBD with Parramatta and Westmead.

The newly announced packages cover rolling stock, systems integration, linewide infrastructure and the delivery of five western stations, alongside the appointment of a development partner for the landmark Hunter Street interchange precinct.

Next‑Generation Driverless Trains and Operations Contract

The Metro Trains West Consortium—a partnership between MTR Corporation and CRRC—has secured the 22‑year Trains, Systems, Maintenance and Operations (TSMO) contract.

The contract includes:

• Supply of 16 driverless metro trainsets
• Signalling, communications and control systems
• System integration, testing and commissioning
• 15 years of operations and maintenance from the line’s opening in 2032

MTR Corporation said the consortium would deliver “next‑generation” rolling stock and systems.
Property & International Business Director David Tang said:

“As a global leader in railway operations, MTR brings extensive expertise in railway construction and service delivery. By partnering with CRRC — one of the world’s foremost suppliers of rolling stock — we will deliver world-class systems and operational solutions for this line, connecting new communities and helping drive the city forward.”

CRRC Vice-President Feng Wang said Metro West was “a landmark project that will shape the city for years to come”, adding that its partnership with MTR would “successfully deliver this project and exceed its expectations”.

Linewide Works Contract Awarded to John Holland

John Holland has been selected for the linewide package, covering:

• 60km of track
• Rail systems
• A 38‑hectare stabling and maintenance facility at Clyde
• Operations control centre
• Rosehill servicing facility
• High- and low-voltage electrical systems
• 25kV traction power and associated communications systems

Managing Director for Rail & Transport Steve Butcher said the team would implement an “Australian‑first track system” to improve constructability and reduce noise and vibration.

Five Western Stations to Be Built by Gamuda

Gamuda has been appointed to design and build five underground stations at:

• Westmead
• North Strathfield
• Burwood North
• Five Dock
• The Bays

Each station will be uniquely designed to reflect local character and support new activity around the precincts.

Hunter Street Precinct Partner Appointed

The Metropolis Consortium—Lendlease, Mirvac and Coombes Property Group—has been named Precinct Development Partner for the Hunter Street Station interchange and two over‑station commercial developments.

The precinct is set to become a major new CBD gateway with:

• A 20‑minute travel time to Parramatta
• Pedestrian links to Wynyard
• Direct access to the M1 platforms at Martin Place
• Forecast peak‑hour movements of 15,000 people per hour, rising to 30,000 by 2061

Lendlease CEO of Development Tom Mackellar said the group would “set new benchmarks for transport-led precincts”.

Coombes Property Group CEO Michael Coombes said the project would create “enduring commercial space, high‑quality public amenity and a connected destination that serves the workforce and wider community”.

Further Station Contracts to Come

Contracts for stations at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Pyrmont will be finalised later in 2026.
Three consortia have been shortlisted for the Pyrmont Integrated Station Development, which includes an underground station beneath a proposed 31‑storey mixed‑use tower.

Sydney Metro West services are scheduled to commence in 2032, with construction of Hunter Street Station’s main works expected to begin in late 2026.
