First Major Precinct Designs at Bradfield City Centre Revealed
Overview
The first major precinct within Sydney’s Bradfield City Centre has been revealed, introducing a mixed use neighbourhood built around housing, community spaces and strong public transport connections. The design centres on walkability, cultural expression and sustainable urban development.
A New Mixed Use Precinct
The masterplan for the precinct, known as Superlot 1, proposes more than 1,400 new homes supported by commercial, retail and community facilities. Ten percent of the housing is planned to be affordable. The area will sit near the new Bradfield Metro Station and a two hectare central park, helping anchor the precinct within the broader city structure.
Design and Planning Approach
Architecture firms Hassell and Skidmore Owings and Merrill designed the concept in collaboration with cultural partners Djinjama and landscape studio COLA. Their plan focuses on public activity at ground level, active street frontages and shared amenities intended to increase community participation and safety. A fine grained street network and midblock links aim to promote easy movement and a connected public realm.
The Green Loop and Community Space
A fifteen metre wide landscape spine called the Green Loop runs through the site, shaped through First Nations engagement. This green corridor leads to a timber community pavilion with a woven canopy designed as a gathering space for residents. The design expresses a close relationship between nature and city life, emphasising cultural identity and environmental responsiveness.
Part of a New Western Sydney City
Bradfield City Centre forms part of a wider 114 hectare masterplan beside the new Western Sydney International Airport. The precinct joins the Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility as one of the first completed components of the new city. Future stages will bring additional housing, open space, commercial development and education facilities.
