Council Campaign Secures Federal Funding for Calder Interchange

Council Campaign Secures Federal Funding for Calder Interchange

In a significant development, the Australian Federal Government has allocated $300 million towards constructing a much-awaited diamond interchange at Calder Park Drive, a move hailed by Brimbank Council as a substantial enhancement for safety and accessibility along the Calder Freeway.

The funding commitment comes as a culmination of extensive advocacy efforts by Brimbank Council, spearheaded by the ongoing 'Fix the Calder' campaign initiated in 2021, which involves collaborative efforts from the local government, the Calder Action Group, and other community organisations.

Expressing her appreciation, Brimbank Mayor Thuy Dang remarked, “The Federal Government’s promise to invest $300 million into building a new, and safer interchange at Calder Park Drive is welcome news for everyone who uses the Calder Freeway – it is something Brimbank Council has been advocating for.”

Beyond Brimbank, the proposed diamond interchange stands as a critical agenda item for the Calder Highway Improvement Committee, comprising nine Victorian councils situated along the Calder corridor.

Although a business case for the interchange was finalised by the Victorian Government in 2022, progress on the project faced a setback following a national infrastructure project review in 2023. This prompted Brimbank Council to reignite the 'Fix the Calder' campaign in 2024, advocating for the interchange's realisation.

Ahead of the upcoming federal election in May this year, the Council is now urging the Federal Opposition to match the $300 million commitment, emphasising the critical nature of this infrastructure improvement.

“We now call on the Federal Opposition … to ensure this life-saving work takes place, regardless of the federal election result in May,” Dang emphasised.
