A major step forward has been taken in the transformation of Blackwattle Bay, with the New South Wales Government signing a contract to redevelop the former Sydney Fish Market site into a new waterfront precinct. This milestone follows the selection of Mirvac as the development partner and sets the stage for the next phase of renewal along the western edge of Sydney Harbour.

The redevelopment will begin with the construction of a new boardwalk that will complete the final section of the fifteen kilometre Harbour Walk, connecting Woolloomooloo to Rozelle Bay. A wide waterfront promenade will open the foreshore to the public and form the heart of a new harbourside neighbourhood.

Once complete, the Blackwattle Bay precinct will include around one thousand four hundred new homes and more than three hectares of public open space. This will feature new parks, walkways, cycle routes and retail and commercial spaces, creating an active and connected community beside the new Sydney Fish Market and multiple transport links.

Sustainability will play a major role in the project. Plans include living seawalls designed with the Sydney Institute of Marine Science to support cleaner water, as well as a target of reaching net zero carbon by 2030. Early renewal work is already underway, including delivery of the Bank Street Park area beneath the Anzac Bridge, which forms part of a broader network of new public spaces intended to reconnect residents with the harbour.

According to Mirvac, the redevelopment presents an opportunity to draw on more than fifty years of experience in shaping residential and mixed use places, with student accommodation delivered in partnership with Scape by The Living Company adding to the diversity of future housing in the area.
