Contract Awarded for Enhanced Safety and Efficiency on Journeys in Southeast Melbourne
)
The contract has been granted for the upgrade of the Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road junction in the southeastern region of Melbourne, marking a significant stride towards safer and faster journeys for residents of Clyde North, Cranbourne North, and Berwick.
Whelans Group Investments, a Victorian family-owned and operated business, emerged as the successful bidder for the project aimed at alleviating congestion and enhancing traffic flow for the 47,000 daily commuters navigating through the bustling intersection.
The planned enhancements involve replacing the existing roundabout with traffic lights, along with bolstering bus infrastructure to elevate driving conditions and ensure motorists' safety. Additionally, the project includes the construction of walking and cycling paths along the intersection to provide safer travel alternatives for all road users.
In the upcoming months, work crews will engage in site investigations, utility relocations, and site setup activities to lay the groundwork for major construction activities set to commence later this year, with a projected completion date in mid-2027.
This initiative is poised to generate local employment opportunities, with 120 direct jobs and 297 indirect roles expected to be created during the construction phase.
In conjunction with the ongoing efforts, completed projects in Melbourne's southeast, such as upgrades to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Pound Road West, Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road, and Hall Road, have already played a part in easing congestion for motorists and bustling families in the area.
Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government, Catherine King, said, “This busy roundabout will be transformed with traffic lights, bus bays and footpaths which will have a significant flow on effect for everyone using the intersection.”
Acting Victorian Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Sonya Kilkenny, remarked, “As Melbourne’s south east continues to grow, we are continuing to make critical investments on our road and rail networks to cut congestion and slash travel times for families.”
