Construction Commences at Benalla for Inland Rail Project
The eagerly awaited transformation of Benalla railway station is about to kick off, as Inland Rail and construction collaborator John Holland gear up to initiate extensive works on the site.
This initiative involves the replacement of the existing pedestrian underpass to make room for a modern, wheelchair-accessible underpass equipped with lifts and pathways. These adjustments are part of a larger scheme aimed at accommodating double-stacked freight trains. The project also encompasses the relocation of the east track to establish a new west track, the construction of a fresh platform, and the development of an open forecourt along with an enhanced car park.
Benalla stands as one of the eight construction sites falling under Inland Rail's Beveridge to Albury (B2A) Tranche 2 project, alongside other locations such as Broadford, Wandong, the Hume Freeway at Seymour and Tallarook, and Euroa.
Scott Anderson, acting delivery director for Inland Rail's B2A segment, highlighted the initiation of construction at Benalla as a significant achievement for the program.
“We’ve worked closely with the Benalla community for many years to design a safer and more accessible railway station precinct the community will enjoy for decades,” stated Anderson. “The modified station precinct will deliver many improvements on the current site, and we thank local communities for their patience and understanding as we carry out this transformative work.”
Upon its completion, Inland Rail will establish a rapid freight linkage from Melbourne to Brisbane, enhancing connectivity for regional producers and paving the way for new avenues to domestic and global markets.
