Collins Street Development Set to Introduce 320 New Residences
Melbourne-based developer Sterling Global has unveiled its vision for 623 Collins, a $590 million, 42-storey mixed-use project that harmoniously blend contemporary living with heritage at one of the city's most notable locations.
Elevating above the former State Savings Bank of Victoria, the development, crafted by Plus Studio, will seamlessly integrate modern apartments with meticulously restored historical structures.
The tower is slated to offer 320 apartments, with a significant portion featuring two-bedroom layouts, spanning four residential collections — Heirloom, Signature, The Reserve, and The Penthouse.
Two heritage-listed gems, the State Savings Bank of Victoria (1924) and the Batman's Hill Hotel, will be conserved and revitalized, with the original banking chamber set to undergo refurbishment for a future dining establishment.
In addition to the residential units, the project will encompass 2,700sqm of office space, 900sqm dedicated to retail and dining, and over 800sqm allocated for resident amenities on the sixth level, including a pool, gym, yoga studio, library, games room, and The Bathhouse wellness retreat.
Exclusive upper-level facilities on the 38th floor will cater specifically to The Reserve and Penthouse residents, featuring a private lounge, designated dining spaces, terrace entertainment areas, and a whiskey bar.
The interior design, including the ground-floor lobby, has been curated by Fiona Lynch, establishing an elegant material palette that runs throughout the development.
Brandon Yeoh, Development Director at Sterling Global, expressed that 623 Collins symbolizes a significant juncture in Melbourne's urban progression.
“Melbourne is at a pivotal point in its growth; demand for inner-city living continues to outpace supply, which makes it all the more important to deliver projects that are designed with longevity in mind,” Yeoh stated.
“At 623 Collins, we’ve taken a heritage building that has been part of Melbourne’s story for a century and reimagined it for modern living.
“While new towers will continue to rise across the CBD, buildings with genuine heritage fabric and craftsmanship remain rare and ultimately, that carries not only lasting value for residents, but for the city itself.”
Ian Briggs, Director at Plus Studio, emphasized that the design embodies both the site's storied past and the city's future trajectory.
“Our design approach has been to connect the building closely with its context — a podium that contributes to the streetscape, planted terraces that articulate the transition between heritage and new, and a tower that takes its place on the skyline with clarity and restraint.”
“Partnering with Sterling Global on a site of this significance is a privilege, and we’re excited to see the project become part of Melbourne’s evolving story.”
Having acquired the amalgamated 2,000sqm site in 2023 and securing an amended planning permit last month, Sterling Global is set to commence construction on what promises to be a remarkable addition to the Collins Street precinct.
