Collaborative $260M Investment in Victorian Road Safety

Collaborative $260M Investment in Victorian Road Safety

The Federal and Victorian governments have united forces to initiate 16 critical projects throughout Victoria as part of the Federal Road Safety Program, aiming to enhance safety measures across the state.

With individual contributions exceeding $69.7 million from each government, the joint investment surpasses $139.4 million, marking a substantial combined commitment of $259.5 million under the programme.

This bolstered funding seeks to elevate safety standards by strategically addressing hazardous crossings, intersections, and roads across Victoria, thereby diminishing the likelihood of severe or fatal accidents.

One notable project involves the installation of traffic lights at problematic intersections such as Deakin Avenue (Sturt Highway) and Sixteenth Street in Mildura—acknowledged as a black spot—and at Stud Road and McFees Road in Dandenong.

Furthermore, enhancements to pedestrian safety will be implemented through upgraded traffic signals at notorious intersections in Frankston, Banyule, and Bayside, alongside dedicated right-turn lanes at four intersections spanning Ararat, Ballarat, and Horsham.

In regional Victoria, a $22 million initiative will focus on line marking enhancements at high-risk intersections within the Gippsland, Hume, Loddon-Mallee, Grampians, and Barwon south-west regions.

An additional allocation of $10 million will target motorcyclist safety improvements, encompassing enhanced barrier protections, skid resistance upgrades, shoulder sealing, and improved curve signage.

Projections indicate the creation of approximately 172 new construction roles throughout Victoria over the program's duration.

Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Development, Anthony Chisholm, affirmed, “This additional funding is all part of our collective promise to do what we can to significantly reduce the number of road deaths and serious injuries on our roads, and it’s great to see the Victorian Government come to the table and collaborate with us on this.”

Mr. Chisholm emphasised that these endeavours will not only enhance safety but also present regional community members in Victoria with opportunities in construction and planning sectors.

He added, “The wider Road Safety Program forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to work with state and territory governments to fund the priority road safety works they identify.”

Minister for Local Government, Ports and Freight, Roads and Road Safety in Victoria, Melissa Horne, expressed, “Any life lost on our roads is a tragedy, that’s why we’re working with the Federal Government to reduce road trauma. These new projects build on our record investment in road safety infrastructure which is saving lives, reducing injuries and preventing crashes before they happen.”
