Central Station Terminal Upgrade Moves Ahead with Major Public Space Improvements
The Sydney Terminal Building Revitalisation Project is progressing as part of broader upgrades taking place across the Central Precinct. As the precinct continues through the rezoning phase, Transport for NSW is advancing several works intended to enhance the public environment and create new community spaces. These efforts include improvements within the Western Gateway Sub Precinct along with the staged renewal of the Sydney Terminal Building.
Recent activity focuses on changes to Eddy Avenue Plaza, Eddy Avenue Colonnade, and the Eastern Terrace, which make up the first stage of the revitalisation. Current works include preparing for new footpath construction, concrete work for a new retail building, removal of existing awnings, installation of power and water services, and the setup of a crane to support overhead work. Temporary closures and diversions are in place while access routes are adjusted, with pedestrian movement maintained through the covered colonnade.
Approved in November 2023 as a State Significant Infrastructure project, the revitalisation aims to renew the heritage listed terminal building and significantly elevate the customer experience for visitors and passengers. The project is intended to make Central Station a more modern, welcoming and accessible destination by improving safety, public spaces and connections throughout the precinct.
State Significant Infrastructure classification reflects the cultural value of the building and the scale of work required. The project is being delivered in stages, with the first stage laying the groundwork for upgraded retail offerings, improved circulation, better lighting, updated landscaping and clearer wayfinding throughout the terminal area. Later stages will address the remaining components of the approved renewal plan as design and planning continue.
Overall, the revitalisation project sets out to restore the historic character of Central Station while creating a functional and contemporary environment that better serves the growing number of people who travel through the precinct each day.
