Big Fishermans Bend Project Gets Started
)
The transformation of the iconic former General Motors Holden site in Victoria has kicked off with the start of construction.
The initial phase of the Fishermans Bend Innovation Precinct (FBIP) in Melbourne signifies the start of a project aimed at converting the historic car factory into a centre for advanced manufacturing, engineering, and design.
Winslow Infrastructure Pty Ltd has been enlisted for the primary construction tasks, which entail the creation of new roads, a public park, and essential infrastructure to support the planned industries within the precinct.
Additionally, these developments will establish an east-west link connecting Salmon Street to Todd Road, priming the land for future industrial investments.
Another contract has been secured by OneWifi to install smart poles outfitted with 5G capabilities, local WiFi networks, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
The FBIP forms a part of the larger 480-hectare Fishermans Bend urban renewal initiative, spanning across the City of Melbourne and the City of Port Phillip.
Upon completion, the precinct is projected by the State Government to house 80,000 residents and provide employment for 80,000 individuals by 2050.
The government's $180 million investment in the FBIP is anticipated to establish a world-class hub for advanced manufacturing and engineering.
Moreover, the precinct will integrate with the University of Melbourne's forthcoming School of Engineering and Design, slated to open next year.
Future plans for the area encompass a potential rail tunnel connecting Fishermans Bend to Docklands, a proposed tram link, and enhanced bus services.
Last year, the state government endorsed a preferred route for the rail tunnel, offering landowners what is described as "certainty" regarding the development.
